Homeschooling is becoming more popular every day, with a growth rate of 7 to 15 percent per year. There are about two million children currently learning at home. Homeschooled kids do well on standardized tests, are welcome at colleges and universities, and as adults, have a reputation for being self-directed learners and reliable employees. Education - Free Public Schools. Chapter 27 - School Attendance. Subchapter I - School Attendance Requirements. This statute pertains to exemptions for those parents who chose to educate their children at home. See specifically sections 2703 (Private school attendance or other educational instruction) and 2703A (Homeschools defined). Section 2704 pertains to reporting requirements.

A Fifteen Year Perspective

When Michael Farris and Michael Smith founded Home School Legal Defense Association in March of 1983, home schooling was just a tiny blip on the education radar screen. The concept of parents teaching their children at home was relatively obscure, and the families who chose to follow this non-traditional education route were fairly certain to face opposition from the educational bureaucracy and following legal entanglements, as well as from their own friends and family.
